Feature Performance: VINES
VINES is a site-adaptive, ecosomatic practice and performance by Melanie Kloetzel (kloetzel&co.) that explores how the human body can embody the growth patterns of climbing plants to forge deeper connections with urban spaces and more-than-human species. Drawing on Indigenous concepts of relationality, VINES invites viewers and participants to learn from and identify with plants as kinship species — translating their movements into the human body to cultivate empathy and belonging.
Developed through research intensives in Toronto and Calgary with dramaturgical support from Brandy Leary (Anandam Dance), and supported by Canada Council for the Arts and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Tonight’s performance is produced by TRAction, an Indigenous and non-Indigenous led climate art collective based in Moh’kinsstis, with support from Calgary Arts Development.

The Case for Climate Optimism
Chris Turner
We are in the midst of a full-scale industrial reset, and Calgary sits at the centre of it. Here, oil and gas expertise is converging with carbon removal, hydrogen, agriculture, electricity systems, and renewables to build something entirely new in real time. The question is not whether this transformation will happen, but whether we will lead it. Leadership now means proving that we can scale production while reducing emissions, integrate systems across sectors, and create globally competitive industries at speed.

Buying the Future We Want
Frances Edmonds, Head of Sustainable Impact, HP
Procurement has quietly become one of the most powerful levers for shaping markets, driving decarbonization, and redefining competitiveness. In this keynote, Frances Edmonds shares how supply chains are being transformed in real time, from shifting buyer expectations and Scope 3 pressure to the growing demand for transparency, resilience, and responsible sourcing. This is not about incremental change. It is about a fundamental reset in how value is defined and who gets to compete. The message is clear: organizations that rethink procurement as strategy, not function, will lead. Those that do not will be left out of the next generation of supply chains.

The Methane Moment: The Signal & The Noise
Bryan Helfenbaum (Moderator), Chelsea Goral (Highwood Emissions), Jacqueline Peterson, Blake Wickland (MELA)
Methane is no longer a technical issue. It is a market signal, a policy priority, and one of the fastest ways to prove credibility in a decarbonizing energy system. But in Canada, that signal is being shaped by ongoing uncertainty, despite the federal-provincial MOU, and what it means for regulation, alignment, and enforcement. This session will contrast what is happening in the Canada and the US markets, raising the stakes for Canadian producers competing for capital and market access. This panel brings together leaders from measurement, certification, and production to explore what it takes to detect, reduce, and verify methane emissions at scale, and how companies can navigate policy ambiguity while staying competitive in a rapidly evolving North American landscape.

The Truth About Scaling Climatetech: How to Breakthrough & Why It's So Hard
Ericka Rios (Alberta Innovates), Travis Brookson (Svante), Sabrina Scott (CURA), Dave Hochhalter (Carbon Removal Canada), Sean Collins (Varme Energy)
The early wins are celebrated. The breakthroughs get headlines. But most climate technologies stall in the brutal middle, stuck between pilot success and commercial scale. This panel brings together founders, and system builders for an unfiltered conversation about what it actually takes to scale in Alberta and beyond. From capital gaps and infrastructure constraints to policy friction and market readiness, the discussion will surface what is working, what is not, and where the real bottlenecks lie. The objective is not inspiration. It’s clarity on how to move climate tech from promising to bankable, and why the companies that solve for scale will define the next generation of industrial leadership.

Beyond Sustainability: The System Shift That Changes Everything
Chad Frischmann (RegenIntel)
What if the goal is not to sustain what we have, but to redesign it entirely? In this keynote, Chad Frischmann, co-architect of Project Drawdown, challenges the limits of today’s climate conversation and introduces a systems-based approach to building a regenerative future. Drawing on the world’s most comprehensive analysis of climate solutions, he reframes the challenge from isolated actions to an interconnected “system of solutions” that can not only stop emissions, but begin to reverse them . This is a call to move beyond incremental change toward a coordinated transformation of energy, food, industry, and society itself, and to recognize that the tools already exist if we have the courage to align and scale them.

AI is accelerating at a pace few predicted, and behind every breakthrough is a surge in energy demand that could either strain or transform our power systems. This panel brings together leaders across data centre development, clean power certification, infrastructure, and regenerative design to confront the trade-offs head-on. How do we scale AI while minimizing its environmental footprint? Can data centres become catalysts for grid innovation through geothermal, clean power sourcing, and smarter design, or will they simply compete for scarce energy? From siting and infrastructure to verification and system integration, this conversation explores whether AI becomes a power play that strengthens our energy future or a power drain that undermines it.

Extreme Collaboration in Times of Extreme Polarization: Resilience via Regenerative Place Making
Leonardo Maldonado
Artificial intelligence is rewriting the rules faster than we can read them, polarization is turning neighbors into enemies, and beneath the noise lives an epidemic of loneliness. But an idea is gaining ground: the antidote to extreme polarization is not moderation but Extreme Collaboration: a practice of working across difference that goes beyond dialogue or transactional partnership. When extreme collaboration takes root in a corner of the world, it expresses itself through regenerative place making: the practice of co-creating spaces that restore ecosystems, strengthen economies, and reweave community ties. The question is how we can foster Extreme Collaboration in our communities.

Calgary’s urban challenges are deeply interconnected – spanning mobility, housing, climate, governance, and data – demanding holistic solutions rather than siloed approaches. A vibrant city is not defined by technology alone, but by its ability to enhance everyday life in ways that are meaningful and locally relevant. The city’s most effective opportunities for action lie at the intersections of energy and mobility, transit and social services, permitting and utilities, and the coordination of data, governance, and community input. This panel will pull on some of these key themes to test how Calgary can meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.

Cities are facing a fast wave of new technology that’s changing services and jobs. Those that embrace these technologies can improve public services and help workers transition smoothly. This session will show how cities can create “safe spaces” to test new tech before rolling it out everywhere. By setting up controlled testing environments, cities can lower risks, build skills, and create smart policies that protect residents while moving forward. A big part of this is building local tech communities through three strategies: Living Labs for real-life testing, making it easier for innovative companies to work with local governments, and community spaces that give everyone access to new tools and knowledge. Importantly, young people play a key role in this change. Involving them in testing technology, governance discussions, and skill-building programs helps nurture the next generation of civic leaders, ensuring that these changes benefit everyone, not just a few businesses.

Innisfail, AB: The World's First Multi-Technology DAC Facility
Shuttle departs & returns from The Brownstone
Alpha is the world’s first project to deploy multiple direct air capture technologies at a single facility, running side-by-side in a real-world Canadian climate. Rather than betting on one technology, Deep Sky’s tech-agnostic approach lets the best solutions prove themselves through actual performance data, not just lab results.
Multiple state-of-the-art DAC systems operate simultaneously at the site, each equipped with standardized instrumentation to collect and compare operational data year-round. Deep Sky’s software tracks and benchmarks everything, accelerating learning across the entire industry. The top performers won’t just succeed here; they’ll be scaled up across future Deep Sky sites.

Sacred Story of Water: A Panel Discussion with the Guardians of the Sacred Lands

The Niitsítapi — the Blackfoot people — have lived in relationship with the waters of the northern Great Plains for more than 18,000 years. In that time, they developed one of the most sophisticated water governance systems the world has ever known: not written in law, but carried in ceremony, in language, in the names of the rivers themselves, and in the living knowledge of the Elders and knowledge keepers who still hold it today.
Sacred Story of Water is a panel discussion that traces the full arc of that relationship — from creation to crisis to the vision of full restoration. It is a conversation about climate, yes. But it is also a conversation about memory, reciprocity, and what it means to truly belong to a place.
The journey begins at the beginning — with Napi, the creator, shaping the world from water. It moves through the sacred and everyday ways water sustained every dimension of Blackfoot community life: the Beaver Bundle ceremonies, the beaver pond water infrastructure, the protocol of take, share, and return. It confronts the wounds — the severing of the covenant at Treaty 7 in 1877, the industrial damage to the Bow, Oldman, and Belly rivers, and the accelerating climate crisis threatening the glaciers that feed them all. And it ends with a vision — not conservation, not management, not mitigation — but full reciprocal restoration. The ability to once again take from the water freely and with ceremony. To share it with all who come to the territory. And to return it as it was received: clean, alive, and sacred.

[TOUR] ACCTC Tour
Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre
Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre
Ever wondered what it actually looks like to capture carbon at scale? This is your chance to find out.
Join us for a guided tour of the Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre (ACCTC), one of Canada’s most unique carbon capture demonstration facilities, located right here in Calgary next to the Shepard Energy Centre.
At ACCTC, real industrial flue gas from an 860 MW natural gas power plant is being used to test and validate the next generation of carbon capture and utilization technologies. This isn’t a lab bench — it’s a full-scale proving ground where innovators come to de-risk their climate solutions before bringing them to the world.
During the tour, you’ll get an up-close look at the facility’s five demonstration bays, explore the Amine CO₂ Capture Unit, and hear directly from the scientists and engineers working to turn CO₂ from a liability into an asset.
